Why you'll love it

It's a quick and easy way to have a nutritious breakfast! This steel cut oats recipe is full of good for you fiber and nutrients. And what could be better than making it in the Instant Pot? You'll have a piping hot breakfast in about 30 minutes without having to tend to the stove.

It's made with easy to find fresh and pantry ingredients. It's made with basic pantry ingredients like steel cut oats maple syrup, cinnamon and salt.

It's versatile and budget friendly. Steel cut oatmeal is simple in flavor and is begging for some fun additions. Try adding blueberries, dried fruit, fresh fruit, pumpkin puree, nuts, chocolate chips, or peanut butter.

Ingredients

Steel cut oats - You'll love the chewy texture of this amazing plant food. It's rich in protein and fiber, which helps ward off those mid-morning hunger pangs! If you need a gluten free option, be sure the package states that it's gluten free. Don't substitute with rolled oats for this recipe.

Maple syrup - a natural sweetener that contains minerals and antioxidants. Adjust the amount to your preference or use a no calorie sweetener like Splenda.

Water - This recipe is made with 6 cups water, but you can replace some of the water with milk if you prefer. Unsweetened almond milk is a good choice, and so is oat milk. Choose whichever variety you prefer or have on hand.

Cinnamon and salt - Cinnamon and oatmeal pair so well together. Salt balances the sweetness, but it can be left out if you're are watching your sodium intake.

Butter - completely optional. I make it without, but many folks like adding butter to their oatmeal.

Step by step instructions

Add oatmeal, water, salt, cinnamon, and maple syrup to instant pot. Butter (2 tbsp) is optional. Stir to combine.

Close and lock lid. Set instant pot to high pressure for a cook time of 8 minutes. At the end of the cooking cycle, use a natural release for 10 minutes. Release any remaining pressure manually by pressing the steam release valve with the handle end of a wooden spoon.

Open lid and give the oats a good stir. Oatmeal will thicken up up on standing.

Recipe notes

Be sure you are familiar with your brand of pressure cooker before making this recipe. Read the safeguards and instructions to understand the controls and features. I made this recipe with the Instant Pot Ultra 60 (6 quart).

Don't substitute rolled oats for this recipe!

Adjust water to reach your desired consistency. You may need to experiment to reach the consistency you like. This recipe is on the thicker side, not soupy.

Butter is optional, but it does give the oats a slight richness and helps keep the oats from sticking to the sides of the pot. Use coconut oil to keep this recipe vegan.

Meal prep toppings the night before so they'll be ready to go in the morning. Wash and cut any fruit you may want to add to your oatmeal. Start the instant pot when you get up and 25 minutes later, you’ll have an easy, hands free breakfast for the whole family will enjoy.

Replace one cup of water with your choice of milk, if desired. I prefer to use water to make the oats, then add milk, half and half, or heavy cream to the finished dish.

Store leftovers in a tightly sealed container for 3 or 4 days. Add a splash of milk or water to your desired serving size then rewarm in a microwave safe bowl.

Can I freeze steel cut oats?  To freeze, divide cooked oatmeal into desired serving sizes. Place in freezer safe bags or containers. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator then rewarm in a microwave safe bowl with a splash of milk or water.
