Why this recipe works

Loads of flavor - this flavorful meal is going to be a hit with family. It's filling and satisfying and can easily be paired with pasta, rice, or salad.

Simple recipe - nothing complicated about this recipe - in fact, it's great for beginners!

Air fried - the air fryer is great way to cook food faster and without adding excessive amounts of fat making food a bit healthier.

Ingredients

Italian sausage - we like sweet Italian sausages or mild Italian sausage. This recipe uses raw sausages made from pork so they will need to be fully cooked through. You can choose chicken sausage which is lower in fat.

Bell peppers - you can choose green bell peppers, red peppers, yellow ones. Just choose your favorite, or what's on sale.

Onions - totally optional, but we love how the air fryer caramelizes onions. We usually do red onions, but yellow onion is also really good.

Olive oil

Balsamic vinegar - red wine vinegar will also work well

Garlic - fresh diced garlic is best but garlic powder will work too

Salt and black pepper

Italian seasoning - or use a combination of dried basil and oregano

Crushed red pepper flakes - like the kind you sprinkle on pizza. This adds some heat and flavor, but if you're using hot Italian sausage, or just don't want any extra heat, then you can make this optional.

  • Refrigerate for 30 minutes or longer, up to 8 hours. You can skip the marinating time if you're in a hurry, but don't skip adding the marinade!

Quick facts

How do I know when sausages are done?

Sausages are done when they are cooked to an internal temperature of 155-160 degrees F.

Can I boil sausages before air frying or grilling?

Yes, that's a great cooking process to keep sausages moist and juicy. Try simmering (not boiling) in beer for best flavor. Once sausages are fully cooked, just pop them in the air fryer to brown, about 5 minutes at 370 degrees F.

Top tips

Cooking time may vary depending on the type of sausage you're using. Use a meat thermometer to be sure meat is cooked to a safe internal temperature.

Marinating the sausage and peppers first is totally optional. If you're in a hurry you can skip this step. But if you have the extra 15 minutes, it's worth it.

Try your favorite sausages to change up the recipe. There are some great chicken and turkey sausages available at the grocery store. Precooked sausages are ok too, just adjust cook time if necessary.

How to store

Store leftover sausage in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 4 or 5 days.

Freeze in freezer safe containers for up to 3 months.

Reheat in the microwave until heated through.

What tastes good with Italian sausages?

  • Loaded Mashed Potatoes
  • Basmati Rice
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Garlic Bread
  • Texas Baked Beans
