If you're looking for the perfect margarita with a fun twist, then you need to try this Texas Margarita recipe. It has become one of our favorites on those hot summer nights Texas is known for.

What we love about the Texas margarita is the addition of orange juice. It turns the classic drink into a citrusy cocktail with a light and bright flavor. It tastes great with our favorite Tex Mex recipes like this Blackened Oven Baked Tilapia or these Air Fryer Jalapeños.

You don't have to wait for summer to enjoy this great drink. They're great any time of year!

Why you'll love this recipe

  • Simple ingredients
  • Easy to make
  • Change of pace from the classic margarita

Ingredients

Be sure to scroll to the bottom of the post for full recipe, precise amounts, and printable recipe card.

Blanco tequila - there are different types of tequila to choose from these days. The best choice for this recipe is "blanco", which means white in Spanish. It is also sometimes called silver tequila or "plata." It has the most agave forward flavor so it's perfect for mixing into cocktails like Texas margaritas. Our favorite brand right now is Familia Camarena. Silver Patron is another popular option.

Orange liqueur - we like Grand Marnier the best, but triple sec and Cointreau are good as well. Feel free to experiment to suit your taste buds.

Fresh lime juice - fresh squeezed lime juice is always the best option, but bottled lime juice is a convenient alternative.

Orange juice - we like to use fresh oranges for the best flavor. Carton fruit juice or bottled juice is a great alternative.

Agave nectar - agave nectar pulls this orange margarita together and add a touch of sweetness. Simple syrup can be subbed if you don't have any agave.

Coarse salt - if you love a salted rim. I used pink Himalayan salt for a touch of color. This is optional.

Lime wedge or lime slice, orange slice - for garnish. Also optional, but adds a nice touch.

Ingredients to make the cocktail.

Special equipment

  • Cocktail shaker - we prefer to use a shaker to mix and chill the Texas margarita. If you don't have one, you can add the ingredients to the glass and stir.
  • Margarita glasses are a nice touch. I use my hand blown high ball glasses with a blue rim that were made in Mexico.
  • Citrus juicer to make fresh juice.
  • Jigger or measuring cup with ounces marked for precise measuring.

Instructions

1)Pour some salt onto a plate. Be sure your plate is big enough for the rim of your glass.

2)Take a lime or orange wedge and run it over the rim of a margarita glass (or whatever glass you're using).

3)Turn the glass upside down on the salt and wiggle it a little to coat the edge of the glass.

4)Add tequila, Grand Marnier, fresh lime juice, fresh orange juice, and agave nectar to a cocktail shaker. Add a handful of ice, shake back and forth for about 10 seconds.

5)Add plenty of ice cubes to your glass and pour the shaken Texas margaritas over. Garnish with lime wedge and orange slice. Serve immediately.

What can I use on the rim of the glass instead of salt?

If you don't like salt try sugar, tajin, orange or lime zest, or some spices like chile lime (for a touch of heat)!

Can I make this ahead?

To make the Texas Margarita recipe ahead, mix all ingredients together and keep the margarita mixture in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours ahead. Don't add any ice until ready to serve.

How do I make a big batch of Texas Margarita?

If you'd like to make a batch of 8 Texas Margaritas, try these amounts:

  • 1.5 cups tequila (blanco, silver)
  • 1 cup Grand Marnier, triple sec, or Cointreau
  • 1 cup lime juice
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • .5 cup agave or simple syrup

Add all ingredients to a pitcher and stir well. Pour over salt rimmed, ice filled glasses. Serve your Texas Margarita recipe with lime and orange wedges or wheels.

Tips

  • You can use your favorite tequila or what you have on hand. While Texas Margaritas can be made with Texas vodka like Tito's, I prefer Mexican tequila.
  • Mix up a big batch and serve from a large pitcher or glass dispenser.
  • Blend with ice for frozen Margaritas.

Tex Mex to serve with Texas Margaritas

  • Mexican Corn Pasta Salad
  • Rotisserie Chicken Enchiladas
  • Authentic Mexican Guacamole
  • Ground Beef Queso Dip
