Ingredients

Hoisin sauce - hoisin sauce is a rich, thick sauce with a salty and sweet flavor. It is my go-to for all my stir fries and other Asian dishes.

Soy sauce - I consider this an essential ingredient for this recipe, so don't skip it! like low sodium soy sauce. There are other options to choose from like light or dark soy sauce. Teriyaki sauce is also a good substitute, but some versions are very sweet. If you're unfamiliar with the taste of a particular bottle, check the sugar content on the label to see how much sugar or carbs are in it.

Can I use coconut aminos instead of regular soy sauce?

Coco aminos are a great low sodium substitute for soy sauce. It's similar in taste and is gluten free, dairy free, and soy free.

Sesame oil - the nutty flavor in sesame oil really works well in stir fry. It also helps to coat the other ingredients while being stir fried.

This recipe is delicious with just these few simple ingredients. But it's easy to make some variations to make it even more interesting!

Add a little bit of these optional add-ins to personalize your sauce:

  • Brown sugar or maple syrup
  • Red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, chili garlic paste, sriracha
  • Fresh ginger and fresh garlic - grated
  • Rice vinegar
  • Fish sauce
  • Oyster sauce

Quick facts

How do you make a good stir fry?

Have your ingredients prepped: slice and cut meat and vegetables, mix any sauces together and have them ready to go.

What can you put in a stir fry?

To make a chicken stir fry you'll need bite sized pieces of chicken breast or thighs. The best vegetables to try are bell peppers of any color. They hold up well to high heat cooking. Broccoli, onions, carrots, corn, mushrooms and snow peas are also great tasting. If you prefer a beef stir fry, try a top sirloin that's been thinly sliced. A great way to serve it is with some hot cooked white rice or noodles, sprinkled with sesame seeds and sliced green onions.

How to store

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Freeze for up to three months.

Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature.
