Why my authentic fajita seasoning

  • Authentic flavor from a blend of common spices found at the grocery store.
  • Healthier than seasoning packets that contain preservatives like msg.
  • Can be made different ways by adding additional spices depending on your taste preferences.
  • Not just for fajitas - use in place of taco seasoning for the best tacos.

Use this recipe to make my quick Air Fryer Chicken Fajitas!

Ingredients

  • Salt - I used table salt for this recipe because I wanted the fine texture. Kosher salt can be uses as a substitute. Keep in mind that table salt is "saltier" than kosher salt.
  • Ancho chile powder - this is what gives this seasoning its authentic taste. Ancho chile powder is made from dried poblano peppers and the flavor is smokey and mild. Chile powder (the one used to make chili con carne) is a blend, not pure. It can be substituted, but the flavor is not quite the same.
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Seasoned salt - I used Lawry's brand
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika

Kitchen tips

  • Adjust amounts to your personal preference.
  • If you want to add add kick, add cayenne pepper. One or two teaspoons is plenty!
  • You can easily halve or double the recipe.
  • Other possible spices to add include in your authentic fajita seasoning include ground cumin and dried Mexican oregano.

How to use

  • Use authentic fajita seasoning as a rub with your favorite cuts of beef like brisket and roast. Try it on my Crockpot Mexican Barbacoa or my Cast Iron Flank Steak.
  • Season chicken, turkey, and seafood before air frying, pan frying, or grilling. Sprinkle some on my Air Fryer Tilapia and make fish tacos.
  • Season vegetables like bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and squash.
  • Tastes great with all kinds of roasted potatoes, especially my Homemade Steak Fries.

How to store

Keep your authentic fajita seasoning mix stored in an airtight container along with your other spices for up to one year.

What do you mix the seasoning with to marinate the chicken

Hi Kathy, you can marinate using just this seasoning as a dry rub. Just cover the meat and leave in the refrigerator for up to a day or if you want leave it for just 30 minutes, you can leave it on the counter top. However, if you want add liquid to make a true marinade, I would add half a cup of olive oil (or other neutral oil) and about and ounce of citrus juice (lime, lemon, orange, etc.) or some white wine vinegar (or vinegar of choice). You can also add a little bit of dijon mustard. Then mix in about 3 tablespoons of the seasoning mix. Adjust amounts to taste of course! Hope this helps!
