What Are Tater Crowns

Potatoes are an American classic and if you're a fan of potatoes, you've probably tried tater tots before. But have you heard of tater crowns? Tater crowns are a potato-based snack that's perfect for snacking or as a side dish when you want something more than potato chips.

Tater crowns are made from grated potatoes that are formed into small, coin or crown-shaped pieces- kinda like mini tater tots.  They are a crunchy and delicious snack that's perfect for dipping in your favorite sauce like my homemade buttermilk ranch.

Why You'll Love It

Easy Recipe: One of the best things about this recipe is how quick and easy it is to make. You can cook frozen tater crowns straight from the freezer, and they only take about 10 minutes to cook in the air fryer. No need to preheat the oven or deep fryer. Plus, you don't need to add any extra oil, making it a healthier option than traditional frying methods.

Incredible crunch: The air fryer does an excellent job of crisping up the tater crowns, giving them a satisfying crunch with every bite. The air fryer tater crowns come out perfectly browned and crispy, making them an excellent snack for any time of day.

Quick snack or perfect side dish: Tater crowns are a versatile snack that can be enjoyed on their own or paired with your favorite dipping sauce. They also make a great addition to any meal.

Healthier option: Air frying rather than deep frying in hot oil is the best way to get crispy potato crowns without extra fat and calories. Plus theres no cooking oil to clean up!

Ore Ida Crispy Crowns - I love to use Ore-Ida because they are easy to find at the grocery store. But you might like to try different brands if that's easier.

Cooking spray - or a bit of oil that's mild in flavor like canola, vegetable, or avocado oil.

Seasonings - this is optional, but I like to use a little seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder. Salt and black pepper will keep it simple.

FAQ

Do you need to preheat the air fryer before cooking tater crowns?

It's not always necessary to preheat the air fryer. For best results, it's best to check your appliances manufacturer's recommendations. If you skip preheating when making these tater crowns, you may need to add a minute or two more to the total cooking time.

What are the benefits to air frying?

Air frying is a healthier alternative to deep frying because it uses less oil. When you deep fry tater crowns, they absorb a lot of oil, which can make them high in calories and fat. Air frying, on the other hand, uses hot air to cook the tater crowns, so they come out crispy without all the added oil. This means you can enjoy your tater crowns without worrying about consuming too many calories or unhealthy fats.

Kitchen tips

  • Do not overcrowd the basket for best results. If you have a larger air fryer, you may be able to make an entire bag at once. Smaller air fryers will need to cook in batches.
  • Give the basket a good shake halfway through cooking to ensure even browning.
  • Lightly spray the tater crowns with cooking spray or drizzle with a small amount of olive oil for crispy perfection.
  • Season the tater crowns with your favorite spices or seasonings right after cooking for added flavor.

Serve with these homemade dipping sauces

  • Homemade Barbecue sauce made with Ketchup
  • Creamy Cajun Dipping Sauce
  • Creamy Sriracha Mayo
  • Southern White Gravy

Or serve air fryer tater crowns with ketchup, sour cream, aioli, or honey mustard.

Storing and Reheating

To store your air fryer tater crowns, place them in an airtight container and refrigerate them. They should stay fresh for up to 4 days. If you want to freeze them, make sure to put them in a freezer-safe container or bag. They will last up to 3 months in the freezer.

When you are ready to reheat your tater crowns, there are a few options:

  • Air Fryer: Reheat them in the air fryer at 375°F for 5-7 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.
  • Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F. Spread the tater crowns out on a baking sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.
  • Microwave: Place the tater crowns on a microwave-safe plate and microwave on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute, or until heated through.
  • To keep your tater crowns crispy, make sure not to overcrowd them when reheating.
  • If your tater crowns become soggy after reheating, try placing them back in the air fryer or oven for a few minutes to crisp them up again.
