Want the secret to making the most mouth-watering, authentic steak fajitas at home?

If you're anything like me, you know that nothing beats the flavor of a sizzling hot skillet of fajitas, and the key to getting that perfect taste is in making a homemade fajita seasoning mix.

But why bother making a homemade seasoning when you can just buy a pre-made mix at the store?

Well, my friends, let me tell you - there's nothing like the satisfaction of creating your own spice blend from scratch, and the taste difference is truly worth the effort.

It's simple to make, and you don't need to be a culinary master to whip it up.

All you need is a handful of common spices, a mixing bowl, and a desire to bring a little bit of the authentic Tex-Mex flair to your kitchen.

This authentic fajita seasoning comes together to create the perfect balance of flavors for your fajitas.

Whether you're making chicken, beef, or veggie fajitas, this seasoning blend is sure to take your dish to the next level.

So, put on some lively mariachi music, grab a margarita, and let's get to mixing!

Trust me, once you try this homemade fajita seasoning, you'll never go back to the store-bought stuff again.

Why you'll love it

  • Authentic flavor from a blend of common spices found at the grocery store.
  • Healthier than seasoning packets that contain preservatives like msg.
  • Can be made different ways by adding additional spices depending on your taste preferences.
  • Not just for fajitas - use in place of taco seasoning.

Ingredients

  • Salt - I used table salt for this recipe because I wanted the fine texture. Kosher salt can be uses as a substitute.
  • Ancho chile powder - this is what gives this seasoning its authentic taste. Ancho chile powder is made from dried poblano peppers and the flavor is smokey and mild.
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Seasoned salt - I used Lawry's brand
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika

Kitchen tips

  • Adjust amounts to your personal preference.
  • If you want to add add kick, add cayenne pepper. One or two teaspoons is plenty!
  • You can easily halve or double the recipe.
  • Other possible spices to add include in your authentic fajita seasoning include ground cumin and Mexican oregano.
What meat can be used to make fajitas?

While skirt steak is traditional for beef fajitas, you can opt for boneless skinless chicken breasts, shrimp, or a combination.

What is usually in a fajita?

This delicious Tex Mex dish consists of grilled steak or chicken that's been sliced into strips. The meat is often cooked with sliced bell peppers and white or red onion. It's typically served with warmed flour or corn tortillas, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and salsa. A squeeze of fresh lime juice compliments the dish perfectly.

How to use

Use authentic fajitas seasoning as a rub with your favorite cuts of beef like brisket and roast.

Season chicken, turkey, and seafood before air frying, pan frying, or grilling.

Season vegetables like bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and squash.

Tastes great with all kinds of roasted potatoes, especially these steak fries.

How to store

Keep your fajita spice mix stored in an airtight container along with your other spices for up to one year.

What do you mix the seasoning with to marinate the chicken

Hi Kathy, you can marinate using just this seasoning as a dry rub. Just cover the meat and leave in the refrigerator for up to a day or if you want leave it for just 30 minutes, you can leave it on the counter top. However, if you want add liquid to make a true marinade, I would add half a cup of olive oil (or other neutral oil) and about and ounce of citrus juice (lime, lemon, orange, etc.) or some white wine vinegar (or vinegar of choice). You can also add a little bit of dijon mustard. Then mix in about 3 tablespoons of the seasoning mix. Adjust amounts to taste of course! Hope this helps!
